Harman School was built in 1950. The previous school building remained standing until a few years ago when it was sold and destroyed so that the current Senior Center could be built in its place. Harman School was intended to house grades one through 12. It's large gymnasium was a source of great pride at the time because the old school had not had a gymnasium or a stage.
If you do the math, you will know that more than sixty-seven classes have graduated from Harman. We still have their pictures in our hallways, including a few from the old school dating back to 1940. This may have been when the community got a high school for the first time. Prior to that students could only attend school to eighth grade. If they wanted to graduate high school, they had to move away from home. Some went to Elkins, some to Davis, some to Petersburg, and some even went to Virginia. It must have been traumatic for these young people to have to leave home, and it must have been wonderful when there finally was a high school at Harman.
